Lindsey Duncan, G/T Specialist

Lindsey DuncanMy name is Lindsey Duncan and this will be my 13th year of teaching. I previously taught Kindergarten and Fourth grade in Oklahoma. Once I moved back to my hometown of Cabot, I was blessed to get a job at Northside, teaching with the team I practice taught with in college.

I taught third grade for four years, and found myself back with my love of fourth graders at Southside! This year I'm excited to welcome a new bunch of GT kiddos at my childhood school of Southside Elementary!

This is my sixth year at Southside. I graduated from ASU Jonesboro with my Master's Degree in Gifted Education, and I also took classes through Arkansas Tech University to complete my English as a Second Language certification. I'm excited to meet my new children so we can learn together!

About G/T:
Identified students receive direct instruction for a minimum of 150 minutes per week. Our elementary program is broken into three areas of study.

Advisory is a time when we learn more about ourselves and those in our class. It is where we address social/emotional issues, but it is also where we explore the type of learners we are and how we can support one another. We practice logical thinking during advisory, as well as participate in simple engineering activities designed to teach, but also to delight.

Math in GT involves hands on learning as well as online learning through Khan Academy. G/T students are given assignments, and they work through these as their own pace, setting goals and assessing their achievements. Third and fourth grade G/T students also take part in a program called "Hands on Equations." H.O.E. is like an introduction to algebra using manipulatives.

I.S.P. stands for Independent Study Plan, and it allows students to select topics for research, and then design a presentation so that they can share what they have learned with others, including their families and students outside their G/T class. In addition, STEM units that explore matter, simple machines, and electricity are a part of this segment of G/T.
