Kiwanis Honors Banquet Recognizes Top Cabot Students
April 29, 2015

April 29th, 2015
The 22nd annual Kiwanis Honors Banquet was held Tuesday night, April 28th, 2015, in the Cabot Junior High North cafeteria.
It was a big night for Cabot High School juniors and seniors as the Cabot Kiwanis Club awarded four scholarships and honored students who have maintained a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
More than 350 people attended the event including many proud parents. Co-host of the “Show with No Name” on 103.7 The Buzz, Arkansas Hall of Fame Inductee and former Razorback David Bazzel served as guest speaker.
Bazzel shared several stories of him growing up, especially his time as a college student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Originally from Florida, Bazzel was unfamiliar with snow days and recalled falling flat on his back on campus one day in front of students. He was embarrassed and didn't know what to say to them. Bazzel explained to students there would be times like this, but when you fall down, you get back up and to remember to always be true to themselves.
After Bazzel shared his story, dozens of juniors and seniors were recognized and given certificates for their achievements. The Cabot Kiwanis club awarded four scholarships, two given in memory of past presidents, Gail Carpenter and Mike Flowers, one given in memory of Lane Whitaker, past president of the Cabot Key Club and the last given in honor of Jim and Maxine Thompson for their on-going and faithful service to the Cabot Kiwanis Club and community. In addition to the scholarships this year, the Earl Collins Scholarship from the MO/AR district was also awarded to a deserving senior.
Congratulations to the recipients:
The Lane Whitaker Memorial Scholarship ($1,000): Micah Huckabee
The Gail Carpenter Kiwanis Scholarship ($1,000): Emily Green
The Mike Flowers Kiwanis Scholarship ($1,000): Jennifer Fuller
The Jim and Maxine Thompson Scholarship ($500): Morganne Fason
The Earl Collins Scholarship ($1,000): Charl Young
A special group of students were also recognized at Tuesday night's banquet. K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids) officers from Magness Creek Elementary received a standing ovation for raising $750 for a scholarship that was given to a graduating senior. These 4th graders raised the money by having Christmas and Valentine's Day fundraisers.
