The Arkansas Association of Education Administrators (AAEA) recognized Dr. Tony Thurman at its Superintendent Symposium, Wednesday.
You may recall Dr. Thurman was presented with the 2015 Arkansas Superintendent of the Year Award back in September. Dr. Richard Abernathy, Executive Director of AAEA, surprised Dr. Thurman with the award during a Cabot school board meeting.
This award is given to pay tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead the nation's public schools. These superintendents are then in the running for National Superintendent of the Year and will be recognized and honored at the AASA National Conference on Education in February in San Diego, California.
Michael Ward with Generation Ready provided $1,000 toward Dr. Thurman's trip expenses and Tim Martin with Classworks presented Dr. Thurman with a $500 check to help with traveling costs.
Dr. Thurman has worked in the field of public education for the past 25 years, beginning in 1988 as a school bus driver and substitute teacher for the Monticello School District.
Dr. Thurman was named Superintendent of Cabot Public Schools in May of 2007, where he oversees a student population of more than 10,000 students.
