Cabot School District Names Superintendent-Elect

January 8, 2025

The Cabot School District Board of Education voted unanimously during a special called meeting on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, to name Deputy Superintendent Michael Byrd as the district’s next superintendent. Superintendent-Elect Byrd, a dedicated educator with a 25-year career entirely within the Cabot School District, will assume his new role on July 1, 2025.

Mr. Byrd, a native of Lufkin, Texas, began his career as a science teacher and coach at Cabot Junior High South in 1999. Over the past 25 years, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including assistant principal, building principal, director of student services, assistant superintendent, and most recently deputy superintendent. During his tenure, he has collaborated with stakeholders to develop and implement district-wide programs and policies. His leadership has also been instrumental in leveling building assignments, enhancing student opportunities, and fostering a positive learning environment.

A proud parent, Mr. Byrd and his wife, Jondalyn, have two children who graduated from Cabot High School, and his youngest is currently a 10th grader in the district.

Mr. Byrd earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Master of Education in Administration from Harding University, followed by a Specialist in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. He is a graduate of the Arkansas Aspiring Superintendent Symposium and the Lonoke County Leadership Program. Mr. Byrd is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education in School Leadership at Arkansas Tech University.

As Superintendent-Elect, Mr. Byrd is eager to continue building on the success of Cabot Public Schools, ensuring the district remains a source of pride for students, staff, and the community. “I am truly honored and humbled to step into this role,” said Mr. Byrd. “Dr. Thurman has laid a strong foundation in Cabot, and I look forward to building on that legacy. Together with our incredible educators, staff, students, and families, we will continue to ensure Cabot remains at the forefront of educational excellence.”
