Willie Wonka Family Night at Magness Creek
March 1, 2017
It was the sweetest night of the year as students celebrated the completion of reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was all part of Magness Creek's One School, One Book initiative.
Students recently completed reading the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Magness Creek hosted a Willie Wonka Family Night to celebrate! Willie Wonka greeted families at the door at precisely 5:30 p.m. The evening was filled with science experiments, animals, and gadgets. Of course, there was lots of chocolate to make the night scrumdiddlyumptious!
Teachers shared sweet experiments. Pre-K teachers hosted the stickiest activity with chocolate slime. Kindergarten students explored which candy bars float and which ones sink. The first grade hallway was filled with candy flying from student made catapults. Second grade teachers had everyone popping with their version of Oobleck. Building 3-D figures out of marshmallows kept third grade teachers busy. Fourth grade teachers had everyone collecting data by weighing candy bars.

Harding University and CPS National Honor Society brought several students with experiments to amaze our guests. Students made lava lamps, gliders, and poked dowels through balloons without popping them. The Van der Graaf generator was a hair-raising experience. Everyone's favorite was homemade ice cream frozen by liquid nitrogen. From elephant toothpaste to exploring geodes, the crews from Harding and NHS expanded our thinking.
The media center was a hub for techies. Mrs. Brooks, Director of Instructional Technology, and Mrs. Adkins, our media specialist, had a variety of 21st learning toys.
Cabot High School students brought their traveling robotic zoo. Spheros, Ozobots, and littleBits kept old and young hands busy. Students also showed their parents how to code.
Safari Pets brought real critters for students to pet. The blue-tongued skink and large tortoise were busy all night. An adorable snake made a few new friends. This station was full of shrieks throughout the night. The animals stayed calm, even when some moms didn't.
Mrs. Bankston hosted a chocolate taste test. Magness Creek's favorite kind was white chocolate. We needed the dental hygiene packets Junior Auxiliary passed out after all our sugary treats!
Magness Creek Elementary would like to send a big thank you to all these groups for their time and resources. We also appreciate Sonic supplying refreshments and being our education partner. Our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Family Night turned out to be the sweetest night of the year!
