VFW Post 4548 Awards CJHS Students $4,000

Cabot Junior High South students recently participated in Patriot's Pen. Patriot's Pen is a youth essay competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

The competition provides an opportunity for students to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme.  The essay theme for the current competition is “The America I Believe In.”  

The contest consists of four levels. The first level (entry) is sponsored by local VFW Posts.  Local winners receive the following prizes: 1st Place $250; 2nd Place $200; 3rd Place $150.  

VFW Post 4548 awarded 20 outstanding writers at CJHS with $4,000!

Jasmine Turnage's essay was the one essay chosen to advance to the next level, the VFW District (regional) level where then one first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (state) level. The one first-place winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW national competition. The winner from each Department (state) then competes for the national prizes. The national winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian.

1st: $5,000
2nd:$4,000
3rd: $3,500
4th: $2,750
5th: $2,500
6th: $2,000
7th: $1,750
8-9th: $1,500
10-11th: $1,250
12-22nd: $1,000
23-24th: $750
25-54th: $500
