November 2014 School Board Recognition

November 19, 2014

Nov. 19th, 2014

It was another packed school board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 18th.  Nearly a dozen students and a teacher were all recognized for their accomplishments.

ArkAHPERD Teacher of the Year

Laura Abbott recently received the Arkansas Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (ArkAHPERD) Teacher of the Year Award (TOY).

She was selected the Health Educator “Teacher of the Year” winner and was recently recognized at the ArkAHPERD State Convention luncheon.

Mrs. Abbot's family is in St. Louis and couldn't physically be here but thanks to technology they were able to Skype in and see her be recognized at the school board meeting.

Mrs. Abbott works at the Cabot Freshman Academy.

National JAG Essay Contest Winner

A Cabot High School senior wins a trip to Washington D.C. In fact, he's there right now. Grant Tarvin is the national winner of the JAG Essay Contest.

Before leaving on his trip, Tarvin was recognized at the school board meeting. His family and a group of FFA friends were there to cheer him on.

The JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) program is a year-long class at Cabot High School and teaches many important life skills.

Tarvin was encouraged to enter the contest by his JAG instructor, Brenda Early. His essay, “An Agriculture Career in your Community,” discussed Arkansas' thriving aquaculture industry.  It received the highest marks out of all the entries from across the U.S.

While at the JAG annual student conference, Tarvin will have the opportunity to network with other students, tour the nation's capital and attend many career building and life skills workshops.

Lonoke County Healthy Poster Contest Winners

Several Cabot elementary students were recognized by the Cabot School Board for winning the Lonoke County Hometown Health Coalition “Draw a Healthy Community” poster contest.  Students in K-5 were eligible to participate and were asked to draw a healthy tobacco free community. Recently the prize patrol visited several of the elementary schools and awarded prizes to the poster contest winners. All the winners received a backpack filled with goodies.
