October 2014 School Board Recognition

October 22, 2014

Proud parents packed the Tuesday, Oct. 21st school board meeting. Dozens of students were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.

Boy Scout Recognition

Before the students were introduced, Superintendent Dr. Tony Thurman recognized a young Boy Scout. Jacob, a student at Cabot Junior High South has been working hard to earn a merit badge to become an Eagle Scout. He chose to come to a school board meeting. It was his first time to attend and now he is well on his way to earning his badge.

National Merit Semifinalists

Around 1.5 million students take the Preliminary Standardized Achievement Test (PSAT) every year. Of those students, about 16,000 have scores that qualify them as semifinalists. Arkansas had 132 National Merit Semifinalists this year and 12 of those are from Cabot High School.

Congratulations to Robert Andrews, Payton Binns, Caitlin Harty, Ashley Holt, Rachel Hunt, Annalise Jirik and Alexis Weeks.

*Not in attendance:  Olivia Fredricks, Vanessa Weidling, Maxim Applegate, Sooyoung Matthews and Jon Dale Nichols

AP Scholars

The second group of students honored includes the 2014 AP Scholar Award receipients from Cabot High School. Students enroll in AP or Advanced Placement courses to gain college-level work experience, within the safety and structure of a high school environment. Students have the opportunity to gain college credit for these courses if they succeed not only in the classroom but also on their AP exams. A score of 3, 4 or 5 on an AP Exam is considered a successful score.

Cabot had 69 AP Scholars for the 2014 exams. This is an increase of 8 award recipients from 2013. Many graduated in May, however, there are still two groups of scholars currently enrolled at Cabot High School.

The AP Scholar Award is given to those students who have taken a minimum of 3 exams and achieved scores of 3 or higher on 3 of those exams.

Congratulations to Robert Andrews, Daniel Beltram, Duel Cunningham, Annalise Elsasser, Drake Furrh, Rachel Hunt, Isabel Marrero-Gonzalez, Caitlin Way, Alexis Weeks and Victoria Weeks.

*Not in attendance:  Vanessa Weidling

AP Scholar with Honor

The AP Scholar with Honor recognition is given to those students who achieve an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, AND scores of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these exams.

Congratulations to Payton Binns, Annalise Jirik and Oksana Karjala.

American Heart Association Recognition – Cabot Middle School North

Middle School North Principal Dawn Peeples recognized Coach Ronnie Bates and Coach Megan Head. Both teach a basketball unit each February focusing on heart health. Hoops for Hearts is a competition involving an obstacle course and two shooting competitions. Both coaches encourage students to be heart healthy and raise money to fight heart disease.

In 2012-13, students raised approximately $2,000.  Last year, the coaches publicized the event and upped the game. This time, they raised almost $11,000! This is the highest amount raised in our school history and the highest raised by any middle school in Arkansas. Congratulations to Coach Bates, Coach Head and Cabot Middle School North.
