CHS Students Complete Suicide Intervention Skills Training
May 10, 2019
Fourteen students from Cabot High School and Carlisle High School participated in a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. The training took place in the CHS Media Center.
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training or ASIST, teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and how to work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop. Anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.
During the 2018-2019 school year, three ASIST Workshops were hosted by the Cabot School District and co-sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Health and the Arkansas Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Participants included Cabot School District employees, mental health professionals, health care providers, community members and the most recent training, students from Cabot High School and Carlisle High School. Over the course of these three workshops, 59 people completed the ASIST Training.
Thank you to these students and all our district employees for learning valuable skills to possibly help save a life.
