Roadmap to Reopening: Dr. Thurman's Back to School Video Message

I'm Dr. Tony Thurman, very proud superintendent of the Cabot School District, with a few reminders as we prepare to open on Monday the 24th.

Whether you are enrolled as a traditional student or in our digital program, we are so glad you are back.

We've had quite a stretch since we were first notified by Governor Hutchinson to close effective March 16th, but we are ready to move forward and have a positive and productive school year.

For our CPDA students and parents, we ask that you be flexible and not stress. At this point, we are just glad to be having school, so we all need to know and understand that there are going to be a few frustrations. Now, we are very excited about the program, but it is going to take time for our students and teachers to work through the details.  

For our traditional students and parents returning to campus, we have worked very hard for your safe return to campus. As with our digital students, it will take time to become familiar with our new normal.  

We know that wearing face coverings will not always be comfortable, but we will provide opportunities for them to be removed. It will be important for students to follow directions on when they can be removed and when they are to be worn.  

It will be imperative, especially for our older students, to take personal responsibility for social distancing, just as we have to do anytime we are in public. Are we going to remind, correct, direct, and monitor students when it comes to social distancing and face coverings? Yes, but we also need parents to reinforce that students must do their part and take responsibility by avoiding crowds, keeping a safe distance from others, and wearing a face covering when appropriate.    

Now, I need to speak specifically to our parents. We are going to do everything we can to keep your child safe. In regard to social distancing, we are going to do the best we can, but I will be very straightforward and say that keeping a 6 foot radius clear around every student, every minute, every day, will not be possible.  

There will not always be a 6 foot distance between students on our buses. I will not tell you that this will be the case, because it is not possible. We will constantly sanitize our buses, but it will be imperative for students to wear face coverings. Our bus drivers have always had a difficult job, so please encourage your child to not make this even more challenging by not being cooperative with a face covering.  

Though we have over 1,500 students in our digital program, there will still be many kids at school. Your child may tell you or you may be sent pictures showing that there are still a lot of kids in the hallways and other areas of campus. Even with the mitigation efforts we will have in place, that will be the reality of returning to school, especially on our larger campuses.  Since social distancing will be a challenge, this certainly underscores the imperative for students to be cooperative and wear face coverings appropriately when necessary.  Again, please have this conversation with your child before school begins and let's all work together by taking personal responsibility to do what's necessary to keep one another safe.  

It's a reality that we will have confirmed positive cases of COVID in our school system. We will be as open and transparent as possible while adhering to all privacy laws. We will be posting a news item on our website soon explaining in detail how and when parents will be notified in the event that we have a confirmed case of COVID.  

Finally, we respectfully request that we have grace for one another as we undertake an opening to school like no other in history.  Grace because we know that there will be challenges not anticipated. Grace because we know that it will take time to understand how to learn in a digital setting.  Grace because we have all been placed in this uncertain situation at no fault of our own. Grace because we know that our younger generation closely watches our reactions to adversity, and what better lesson can we teach.

Ya sea que esté inscrito como estudiante tradicional o en nuestro programa digital, estamos muy contentos de que haya regresado.

Hemos tenido bastante tiempo desde que el gobernador Hutchinson nos notificó por primera vez que cerrábamos a partir del 16 de marzo, pero estamos listos para seguir adelante y tener un año escolar positivo y productivo.

Para nuestros estudiantes y padres de CPDA, les pedimos que sean flexibles y no se estresen. En este punto, estamos contentos de tener escuela, por lo que todos debemos saber y comprender que habrá algunas frustraciones. Ahora, estamos muy entusiasmados con el programa, pero a nuestros estudiantes y maestros les llevará tiempo trabajar en los detalles.

Para nuestros estudiantes tradicionales y padres que regresan al campus, hemos trabajado muy duro para que regresen al campus de manera segura. Al igual que con nuestros estudiantes digitales, llevará tiempo familiarizarse con nuestra nueva normalidad.

Sabemos que usar cubiertas faciales no siempre será cómodo, pero brindaremos oportunidades para que se las quiten. Será importante que los estudiantes sigan las instrucciones sobre cuándo se pueden quitar y cuándo se deben usar.

Será imperativo, especialmente para nuestros estudiantes mayores, asumir la responsabilidad personal del distanciamiento social, tal como tenemos que hacer siempre que estemos en público. ¿Vamos a recordar, corregir, dirigir y monitorear a los estudiantes cuando se trata de distanciamiento social y cubrimientos de rostro? Sí, pero también necesitamos que los padres refuercen que los estudiantes deben hacer su parte y asumir la responsabilidad evitando las multitudes, manteniendo una distancia segura de los demás y cubriéndose la cara cuando sea apropiado.

Ahora, necesito hablar específicamente con nuestros padres. Haremos todo lo posible para mantener a su hijo seguro. Con respecto al distanciamiento social, haremos lo mejor que podamos, pero seré muy sencillo y diré que mantener un radio de 6 pies libre alrededor de cada estudiante, cada minuto, todos los días, no será posible.

No siempre habrá una distancia de 6 pies entre los estudiantes en nuestros autobuses. No les diré que este será el caso, porque no es posible. Higienizaremos constantemente nuestros autobuses, pero será imperativo que los estudiantes se cubran la cara. Nuestros conductores de autobús siempre han tenido un trabajo difícil, así que anime a su hijo a que no haga esto aún más desafiante al no cooperar con cubrirse la cara.

Aunque tenemos más de 1,500 estudiantes en nuestro programa digital, todavía habrá muchos niños en la escuela. Su hijo puede decirle o puede que le envíen fotografías que muestren que todavía hay muchos niños en los pasillos y otras áreas del campus. Incluso con los esfuerzos de mitigación que tendremos, esa será la realidad de regresar a la escuela, especialmente en nuestros campus más grandes. Dado que el distanciamiento social será un desafío, esto ciertamente enfatiza el imperativo de que los estudiantes cooperen y usen las cubiertas faciales de manera apropiada cuando sea necesario. Nuevamente, tenga esta conversación con su hijo antes de que comience la escuela y trabajemos todos juntos asumiendo la responsabilidad personal de hacer lo que sea necesario para mantenernos seguros unos a otros.

Es una realidad que habremos confirmado casos positivos de COVID en nuestro sistema escolar. Seremos lo más abiertos y transparentes posible y cumpliremos todas las leyes de privacidad. Pronto publicaremos una noticia en nuestro sitio web explicando en detalle cómo y cuándo se notificará a los padres en caso de que tengamos un caso confirmado de COVID.

Finalmente, pedimos respetuosamente que tengamos gracia los unos para los otros mientras emprendemos una apertura a la escuela como ninguna otra en la historia. Gracia porque sabemos que habrá desafíos no anticipados. Grace porque sabemos que se necesitará tiempo para comprender cómo aprender en un entorno digital. Gracia porque todos hemos sido colocados en esta situación incierta sin culpa nuestra. Gracia porque sabemos que nuestra generación más joven observa de cerca nuestras reacciones ante la adversidad, y qué mejor lección podemos enseñar.
